Area Law Enforcement
Roughly 50 cars have been smeared with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Automobiles, exterior walls and postboxes were marked, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they reported in a statement.
Police state they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a man noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored fluid.
The liquid had been applied in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they reported.
Law enforcement then located many other vandalized cars and building exteriors in the surrounding area.
Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under regulations prohibiting the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.
Police report preliminary tests suggest the liquid was probably blood from a person.
"There is still no clue as to its source; investigators are not yet cognizant of any injuries in association with the event," they stated.
Municipal representatives stated they were trying "to unravel the case" and have appealed to the community for information.
A high-ranking official said the vandalism left him stunned and needed to be addressed quickly.
"This act strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the extremist violent incident in 2020," he posted on social media, recalling the killing of nine people by a assailant targeting individuals of immigrant origin in February 2020.
