The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Win at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue

As any major honors show approaches, one notices a demand for the addition of new categories to honor unsung work and fill the hearts of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague made the case for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. So would strategy board titles, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand is the most urgent above others. This is the request: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and it will always generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason film award organizations avoid this approach. Yet it remains a necessary evil within the realm of video games, showing incredible range they barely qualify as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types successfully include a lot of ground, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Think about these outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles from a specific release, intense tile-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles launched regularly without proper recognition at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated in any category that year
  • A different innovative game received no nominations in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored that year
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often modest productions, yet the craft behind logic titles is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most popular titles in the world and have been for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges famous sandbox experiences competing to become highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and engaging with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. One could readily select five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these are games that otherwise have no home in important events. Puzzle game makers are working at the demanding boundary game development, developing some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
