TikTok Provides Viewers Control to Decrease AI-Generated Media in Personal Streams

The platform is rolling out a updated setting that enables them to lessen the amount of artificial intelligence-produced content appearing in their streams. This move comes as the company disclosed that it now features more than 1 thousand million AI-generated clips.

Testing and Rollout

The update is in a pilot phase over the next few weeks before a widespread release. This shift aligns with a rise in content created by AI, spurred by new video-generation tools.

The Broader AI Trend

Studies have shown that approximately 10% of the quickest rising channels on a popular video site primarily display AI-generated videos. A large amount of this material is deemed “AI slop”, a label for inferior, factory-style content that is typically illogical or surreal.

Based on user feedback that numerous viewers like content made with AI tools, including digital art to science explainers, and we intend to offer the community the ability to increase or decrease of that, depending on their own preferences,” commented a spokesperson.

AI on the Platform

TikTok announced that there are currently 1.3bn videos on its service labeled as made with AI. In total, more than 100 mn pieces of content are submitted to the app each day, making AI-generated material a relatively small portion of its total content library.

How to Adjust Settings

Members will be capable of reduce or increase the volume of AI content they view by using the topic control setting in the application and choosing the AI content topic. Further subjects that are already be adjusted under the setting encompass politics, fashion, aesthetics, and dance.

Content Labeling and Policies

The platform’s guidelines require content makers to identify lifelike AI-generated content, and it forbids dangerous deepfakes of public figures or emergencies. Any realistic artificial content that is not labeled can be removed under its terms of service.

In addition, the app will henceforth attach an artificially created tag to content produced via its built-in AI features, or identified by an industry-wide initiative for spotting artificial media. This measure is intended to deter users from seeking to circumvent the tagging system.

AI Literacy Programs

The platform is also introducing a $2m awareness program for professionals and institutions to produce educational content about ethical AI use. This project will support charitable organizations specializing in training coding and technology.

Moderation Strategy

The video-sharing app has defended its content review process, following debate over intentions to make redundant hundreds of content moderators in the United Kingdom. TikTok is expected to reduce a significant number of roles in its user protection department in the UK capital, with worker representatives and online safety experts voicing alarm that humans are being replaced by machine-led review.

A trust and safety lead explained that people-led review would continue to be important, but automated tools can shield workers by filtering out the most distressing content before it has to be seen by staff. TikTok reported a 76% decrease in shocking and graphic content seen by safety staff over the previous year due to intervention by its AI tools.

“We think that it’s essential to combine humans and technology to ensure user safety,” the official commented. “We’ll have humans as part of that process, but we also think it’s extremely critical to minimize viewing of harmful content as quickly as possible, which is where a lot of the machine support is really helping us operate efficiently.”
